First race

Is anyone else doing the Mountain Man in July? Its going to be my first one and I may need some help figuring out how the race plays out. Where do I put my running shoes, do I carrying a fix-a-flat took kit, where can I use the "head"? Basically all the small stuff that a true beginner does not know about. June is a busy month for work, so i'll be doing late afternoon/evening rides in the dark, runs will take place at lunch time and swimming as time permits. Any help will be greatly appreciated, have a good one.

I'm planning on doing it. I'm pretty sure there are a few other folk that will be there, too. I've never done Mountain Man specifically, but several TriJacks have and can help you out with any questions about the course or anything.

Some advice on transitions:
You'll want to arrive early to set up your transition area before it closes.
Bring a brightly colored towel to put on the ground in your transition area. It will help you find your stuff quickly.
Set your bike up on the rack. If you can hang it by the front part of the seat it will be easier to remove than if you lift a wheel over the bar. (Keep in mind I'm not sure what the bike racks are like in this particular race.)
Set your helmet down with the open side up and the straps hanging out of the sides so you can just pick it up and put it on. Put your sunglasses inside the helmet for the same reason, and put them on first.
If you aren't comfortable clipping your shoes to your bike and getting your feet in them while you're riding, set your bike shoes (and socks if you wear them) on the towel and put them on when you come in from the swim. Try not to sit down to put them on.
Have any run gear ready next to or behind your bike gear. Again, try not to sit down to change your shoes.

If you're going to be wearing a wetsuit, it's a good idea to practice taking it off quickly/while running.

You will want back-up in case of a flat, but actually repairing a tube takes quite a while. I'd recommend you take a new tube and a CO2 cartridge or frame pump along with you.

Hey Dan - I think I'll probably be doing Mountain Man Olympic. I raced it the past two years and it was also my first tri ever in '07. Which distance are you doing? Do you have a wetsuit?

There will be porta-johns near the transition area so you can "hit the head" before the race haha.

Yeah, I'd go with CO2, adapter for the CO2, spare tube, and tire levers. I can let you borrow a CO2 and adapter if you want, I have an extra.

Janee has good points on the transition. The reason you don't want to put your sunglasses on after the helmet is because you'll most likely put the arms of the glasses over your helmet straps, then when you get into T2 before the run, you don't want to pull your helmet off and have your glasses go flying.
The brightly-colored towel is a good idea, but if you're running low on bright pink towels, maybe try to set up near some kinda landmark like a tree. It's surprisingly hard to find your row during the rush of the race if you don't do something like this. It also helps to try to put your bike close to the part you run through, so it's easier to get out there and go (I don't recall this race having bike locations based on your race number, the races at Tempe Town Lake do though, so that's more a matter of luck there).
For my transitions, I normally put my helmet on my aero bars, open end up, with my sunglasses open and inside the helmet. I put my bike shoes on the towel with them opened up as much as possible to get into them quickly. You'll probably have little rocks stuck to your feet, so that's where the towel comes in. I place my running shoes behind the bike shoes with some baby powder inside to help slip em on easier.
It doesn't hurt to practice your transition a couple times at home or something either. I practiced in my driveway before my first one and my neighbors probably thought I was a whack-job, but whatever haha.

Let me know if you have any other questions!

haha remember I lent you those a long time ago? I was wondering where my levers had gone? I'll have to get em back from you when you come up.
